CONCLUSIONS Men with prostate cancer are at risk for bone loss throughout the course of their disease. Bone loss from ADT and the development of bone metastases leads to clinically significant skeletal morbidity and erosion of quality of life in these patients. Zoledronic acid has been shown to increase BMD in patients with prostate cancer receiving ADT and is the only bisphosphonate to demonstrate statistically significant and durable reductions in the incidence of skeletal complications and pain in patients with prostate cancer and bone metastases in a randomized, placebo-controlled trial. Consequently, an expert panel at the 3rd International Consultation on Prostate Cancer recommends a prostate cancer treatment algorithm that supports the use of zoledronic acid at first sign of bone loss in patients receiving ADT and at the first evidence of bone metastases regardless of the patients' hormonal status.
